About Us

The concept for MKS Architecture was born when we became frustrated working for a firm where ego was more important than clients’ desires. We realized what was missing – an architectural design process where clients have a voice and are educated about every step of their residential project along the way.

In 2022, we decided to take a leap, leaving the security of a big firm. We began connecting with people who were excited to transform their residential property, but as homeowners found the process intimidating. Our clients embrace the idea of embarking on this big undertaking with a professional partner who makes them feel comfortable about the process from concept to completion.

Since then, our mission to empower people to build their dream spaces by educating them on the process, actively listening to their needs, and navigating them through a collaborative design process has come to life in ways we never could have dreamed. From Severna Park and Annapolis to Maryland’s Eastern Shore, our clients are living in the beautifully designed and functional spaces that they envisioned, all with the same expertise that the big firms offer, but with a more personal touch.

Meet the Team

MELANIE STERN, RA

Owner | Architect

Melanie always knew she wanted to be an architect. As a child she was interested in how spaces came together and the different ways forms and materials interact like life-sized puzzle pieces. That childhood interest sparked an education path and career that brings more than 20 years of experience in various types, forms and styles of architecture.

Upon graduating from NJIT with a degree in Architecture and Environmental Studies in 2002, Melanie pursued her architectural dreams. She spent many years learning and growing in the commercial architecture realm at large Maryland firms, before deciding to explore residential design. The relationships Melanie built with residential clients over the years sparked a desire to start a company focused on nurturing client relationships and truly listening to clients’ needs.

In 2022, MKS Architecture became a reality, built on the emotional connection that develops from working with clients on their homes. The personal relationships coupled with the professional satisfaction of solving client’s challenges with their existing homes makes this “job” a perfect fit for Melanie.
Melanie is excited to continue to grow MKS Architecture, serving clients in the greater Annapolis area and bringing unique and beautiful solutions to help residents realize the home of their dreams.

Paul Schilder

Partner | Project Manager

Before joining MKS Architecture, Paul spent over 15 years in the commercial architecture world, working as a Senior Project Manager in the Washington DC area. He worked on a wide range of corporate projects, gaining valuable experience across multiple facets of the field—and plenty of time collaborating with contractors to see how drawings translate into built work.

More recently, Paul shifted his focus to residential design, where he’s enjoyed a more hands-on, collaborative approach to architecture. He brings not just his experience to MKS, but also a love for drawing and rendering that bring projects to life and help clients visualize their homes long before they are built. Paul’s attention to detail in the field and in the documentation of the design makes him a huge asset to clients, contractors, and his team at MKS!

Outside the office, Paul has taught at Anne Arundel Community College, volunteered with the Neighborhood Design Center, and helps judge construction competitions for ABC’s Excellence in Construction program. He lives in Mount Rainier, MD, where he spends his free time gardening, tackling house projects, and reading about whatever catches his interest.

The second floor renovations in the Magothy River Retreat are all about function!

We added a dedicated office space for our client who works from home to keep them organized. The second floor laundry gives easy access to all of the home`s bedrooms, so the laundry doesn`t have to be carried up and down the stairs.

By filling in the double height foyer, and bringing the entry out, we created a fun homework nook for the kids to enjoy!

These spaces are all pretty and practical making life easier for this busy family of four.

It`s #WaterfrontWednesday - the perfect day to reveal our new professional photos from the Magothy River Retreat in Severna Park, MD, taken by our friends @peakvisualsus.

Located on the Magothy River this home to a family of four received a make-over, with a second story addition over the existing garage, new entry, dining space, and primary suite, complete with a separate laundry room and a new office.

We were proud to partner with @cornerstoneprojectconsulting who managed the project, bringing our vision to life.

We’re on the final leg of the Cottage On A Cliff tour. Welcome to the primary bedroom suite!

This beautiful bedroom suite features uninterrupted views of the Severn River through the 4-panel glass slider door. The one-of-a-kind headboard is the focal point, custom made from the homeowner’s live edge dining room table.

Our favorite space in the whole house? The primary bathroom! The natural light continues to flow into this space thanks to the skylight above and the double casement and transom window at the tub. The vanity trough sink was fabricated from stone, which the homeowner selected.

This tranquil space provides a private retreat for relaxation and rejuvenation where our clients can unwind and recharge in a calming atmosphere. We hope they love it for many years to come.

We loved tracking the transformation of this beautiful archway leading into the master bath in the Water`s Edge Retreat. From framing and drywall, to priming and trim, we are so happy with the results. We especially love the pocket door custom made to accommodate the arch design!

Small spaces add big function to Cottage on a Cliff!

The mudroom, located off of the back of the home, continues to bring in beautiful water views and natural light with a full-lite glass door. A live edge bench adds a unique design element and the pantry is hidden out of view of the kitchen. Our favorite feature? A pocket dog gate allowing the dogs and cat to come in and out as they please without entering the main part of the home!

The hall powder room also functions as the guest room bathroom. Our design made it accessible to guests without walking through the private spaces of the house. A pocket door separates the powder room from the shower space and access to the bedroom for dual use and maximum flexibility. The beautiful faux paint on the wall was inspired by a custom wall covering that our client loved.

The ACE Annapolis mission is to be the definitive resource and leading conduit for Anne Arundel County high school students to pursue ACE (Architectural, Construction Management, Engineering) careers. Our vision is to advance and sustain the design & construction industry through mentoring, professional networking, and scholarship opportunities.

Melanie Stern has been an ACE Mentor at Severna Park High School since 2024.

Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) is a national construction trade association. They continually strive to be the leading voice promoting free enterprise within the construction industry. ABC will promote and defend the merit shop philosophy. This philosophy encourages open competition and a free-enterprise approach to construction based solely on merit, regardless of labor affiliation.

Paul has been a competition judge since 2018 for the regional chapters’ Excellence in Construction Awards that recognizes and celebrates outstanding projects built by the local members, showcasing quality craftsmanship produced by contractors and their employees!
