About Us

The concept for MKS Architecture was born when we became frustrated working for a firm where ego was more important than clients’ desires. We realized what was missing – an architectural design process where clients have a voice and are educated about every step of their residential project along the way.

In 2022, we decided to take a leap, leaving the security of a big firm. We began connecting with people who were excited to transform their residential property, but as homeowners found the process intimidating. Our clients embrace the idea of embarking on this big undertaking with a professional partner who makes them feel comfortable about the process from concept to completion.

Since then, our mission to empower people to build their dream spaces by educating them on the process, actively listening to their needs, and navigating them through a collaborative design process has come to life in ways we never could have dreamed. From Severna Park and Annapolis to Maryland’s Eastern Shore, our clients are living in the beautifully designed and functional spaces that they envisioned, all with the same expertise that the big firms offer, but with a more personal touch.

Meet the Team

MELANIE STERN, RA

Owner | Architect

Melanie always knew she wanted to be an architect. As a child she was interested in how spaces came together and the different ways forms and materials interact like life-sized puzzle pieces. That childhood interest sparked an education path and career that brings more than 20 years of experience in various types, forms and styles of architecture.

Upon graduating from NJIT with a degree in Architecture and Environmental Studies in 2002, Melanie pursued her architectural dreams. She spent many years learning and growing in the commercial architecture realm at large Maryland firms, before deciding to explore residential design. The relationships Melanie built with residential clients over the years sparked a desire to start a company focused on nurturing client relationships and truly listening to clients’ needs.

In 2022, MKS Architecture became a reality, built on the emotional connection that develops from working with clients on their homes. The personal relationships coupled with the professional satisfaction of solving client’s challenges with their existing homes makes this “job” a perfect fit for Melanie.
Melanie is excited to continue to grow MKS Architecture, serving clients in the greater Annapolis area and bringing unique and beautiful solutions to help residents realize the home of their dreams.

Paul Schilder

Partner | Project Manager

Before joining MKS Architecture, Paul spent over 15 years in the commercial architecture world, working as a Senior Project Manager in the Washington DC area. He worked on a wide range of corporate projects, gaining valuable experience across multiple facets of the field—and plenty of time collaborating with contractors to see how drawings translate into built work.

More recently, Paul shifted his focus to residential design, where he’s enjoyed a more hands-on, collaborative approach to architecture. He brings not just his experience to MKS, but also a love for drawing and rendering that bring projects to life and help clients visualize their homes long before they are built. Paul’s attention to detail in the field and in the documentation of the design makes him a huge asset to clients, contractors, and his team at MKS!

Outside the office, Paul has taught at Anne Arundel Community College, volunteered with the Neighborhood Design Center, and helps judge construction competitions for ABC’s Excellence in Construction program. He lives in Mount Rainier, MD, where he spends his free time gardening, tackling house projects, and reading about whatever catches his interest.

Welcome to the Magothy River Retreat primary bath and walk-in closet!

These tranquil spaces are perfect for unwinding at the end of the day. The design of the closet offers tons of space and organization, while the spa-like bath brings in natural light from the windows and skylights. The accent lighting creates a soft glow at night ideal for relaxation. The separate soaking tub, walk-in shower, and custom double vanity provide everything the couple needs. The laundry room has a door directly from the primary closet as well as from the hall allowing easy access for the rest of the family. The Magothy River Retreat`s new foyer and dining room is a beautiful space to see upon entering the home!

From a dark and dated to bright and airy, we`re so thrilled with the transformation. We created contemporary double-stacked bay windows to enhance the front elevation while also gaining extra space and bringing in light. The former cavernous entry is now bright and inviting while also gaining space on the second floor.

The front room of the house that was formerly a flex space of home office and catch-all room became a welcoming dining space adjacent to the previously renovated kitchen. The custom millwork at the front door allows for a drop zone with hidden storage for this busy young family.

The team at MKS is passionate about the future of our industry and enjoys giving back to the community through the @aceofannapolis today on #internationalvolunteerday and throughout the year.

This year, we are working with Severna Park High School students to transformation Carr’s Beach, part of the future Elktonia–Carr’s Beach Heritage Park, in Annapolis, Maryland. During this 16-week after-school program, students engage in design challenges that connect architecture, environmental resilience, and cultural heritage at one of the most important African American waterfront sites on the Chesapeake Bay.

They will design spaces, structures, and systems that honor Carr’s Beach’s cultural and musical history, protect and restore its shoreline, and welcome the community back to the water.

It’s an important project that we are proud to be a part of. Stay tuned for updates on our progress.

The ACE Annapolis mission is to be the definitive resource and leading conduit for Anne Arundel County high school students to pursue ACE (Architectural, Construction Management, Engineering) careers. Our vision is to advance and sustain the design & construction industry through mentoring, professional networking, and scholarship opportunities.

Melanie Stern has been an ACE Mentor at Severna Park High School since 2024.

Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) is a national construction trade association. They continually strive to be the leading voice promoting free enterprise within the construction industry. ABC will promote and defend the merit shop philosophy.
